Iran's People Cry to Zal
From B2.1, Afrasiab Invades after Garshasp’s Death. It illustrates B2.1.24–31:
- B2.1.24Toward Zabulistan then the people turned,And all the world with anxious rumor burned.
- B2.1.25At Zabul all their voices turned to Zal,That Pahlevan whose strength sustained them all.
- B2.1.26They cried: “You held the world too lightly still; Now danger rises hard against our will.
- B2.1.27Since you have borne great Sahm’s commanding place,Our hearts have known no calm nor settled grace.
- B2.1.28When Zav had passed and Garshasp wore the crown,The wicked and their deeds were beaten down.
- B2.1.29The world stands Shahless; all our ranks lie bare,No chief remains to shield us from despair.
- B2.1.30A force has crossed Jihun; its dust concealsThe very Sun beneath its rolling wheels.
- B2.1.31If any remedy you know, make clear; For Afrasiab’s army presses near.”
