Turan's Nobles Plead in the Dust
From B10.13, Rostam’s Harrowing of Turan. It illustrates B10.13.6–12:
- B10.13.6At last the nobles, broken, bowed in dust,Came forth to plead, stripped bare of hope and trust:
- B10.13.7“Of Afrasiab’s rule we had our fill; Not even in dreams would we see him still.
- B10.13.8The blood he shed unjustly was his crime; We held no voice nor share in that dark time.
- B10.13.9Though gathered here or scattered through the land,We are your servants, subject to your hand.
- B10.13.10Now you are victor; spill no guiltless gore;Do not make war with turning heaven more.
- B10.13.11No man can tell where Afrasiab flies,Or in a dragon’s maw he lives or dies.”
- B10.13.12Wise Rostam heard; his prudent heart was stirred,And grief came over him at every word.
