Giv amid the Thicket of Spears
From B10.21, Giv Puts Kulbad and Nastihan to Flight. It illustrates B10.21.1–10:
- B10.21.1Giv saw afar the dust the riders raised,He drew his sword; his battle-spirit blazed.
- B10.21.2His cry like thunder shook the plain and sky,Till darkness veiled the lion’s brain and eye.
- B10.21.3He swept among the riders like the dust,And turned the earth to lapis with his thrust.
- B10.21.4With khanjar, then with gorz, he struck from high,And rained down iron as he thundered by.
- B10.21.5Beneath Giv’s gopal blows the chiefs gave way,Their hearts grew sick of battle and the fray.
- B10.21.6Giv’s heart laughed in the fury of the fight; The sea itself seemed but a spring in sight.
- B10.21.7The dense ranks closed around him every side,A raging mass of horsemen in their pride.
- B10.21.8The spears like reeds grew thick across the field,Till sun and moon alike from sight were concealed.
- B10.21.9The lion grieved within that spear-thick stand;Blood turned the reed-bed to a wine-red land.
- B10.21.10Giv struck down many riders in the fight,Till all the horsemen wearied of his might.
