Rostam Unhorses Afrasiab; Houman Strikes
From B10.9, Afrasiab Flees before Rostam. It illustrates B10.9.16–27:
- B10.9.16When Rostam saw the dark advancing flag,He sprang, a lion loosed upon a stag;
- B10.9.17He gave swift Rakhsh the rein and drove him hard,And charged through every rank without regard.
- B10.9.18He closed with Afrasiab in the fight,Blood streamed like water from his arrow’s bite.
- B10.9.19An arrow with a willow-leaf point flew,And pierced his helmet’s crown as it drove through.
- B10.9.20His spear drove hard against the hero’s chest,And pierced the leather binding at his vest,
- B10.9.21But Babr-e Bayan turned the spear away;Then Rostam roared and drove into the fray.
- B10.9.22He drove his spear into the charger’s flank;The wounded horse beneath the thrust then sank.
- B10.9.23It crashed to earth beneath the fatal blow,And hurled Afrasiab from the saddle low.
- B10.9.24He reached to seize him by the belt and stayHis road of war before he fled away;
- B10.9.25But Houman saw and raised his gorz on high,Then charged at Rostam with a battle cry.
- B10.9.26He struck the hero’s shoulder with the blow,Both armies roared as iron thundered low.
- B10.9.27Then Rostam wheeled to see who dealt the stroke;His hold on Afrasiab at once broke.
