Rostam Counsels the Shah at Dawn
From B11.7, Rostam Is Sent to the Land of Hind. It illustrates B11.7.2–13 (to B11.7.20):
- B11.7.2Great Rostam came before the royal throne,With Faramarz and Zavareh, well known.
- B11.7.3They spoke of Iran, crown and royal state,And weighed each matter in their long debate.
- B11.7.4Then Rostam said: “O Shah of lofty fame,Great ruler crowned in everlasting flame,
- B11.7.5There lies a province in Zabul’s domain,Once held by Tur before Manuchehr’s reign.
- B11.7.6Till Manuchehr drove Turan from its land,The noble province flourished in his hand.
- B11.7.7When Kavus aged and royal farr grew dim,The light of kingship slowly left with him.
- B11.7.8Turanians seized the city; Iran withdrew,And now to Turan goes its tribute due.
- B11.7.9There elephants and treasure now abound,While guiltless people suffer, terror-bound.
- B11.7.10Its peaceful folk endure the raider’s blade,Through pillage, slaughter, terror, all dismayed.
- B11.7.11Now Iran’s kingship rests within your right,With elephant frame and lions’ claws of might.
- B11.7.12Best send a champion, one who will dare,With mighty troops, to break the Turkish snare.
- B11.7.13Let him compel that province to restoreIts tribute; or a head before your door.
