The Army Buried in Snow
From B12.15, The Snowstorm Campaign. It illustrates B12.15.7–13:
- B12.15.7Upon the Iranian side a tempest rose,And none gave thought to battle with their foes.
- B12.15.8A dense cloud came like dust across the sky,The cold froze lips to teeth as it swept by.
- B12.15.9The tents and pavilions froze in white;Snow drew a thread across each mountain height.
- B12.15.10For seven days the earth was lost to sight,And vanished underneath the storm’s white might.
- B12.15.11They found scant food, scant rest, and little sleep; And stone-like earth lay frozen hard and deep.
- B12.15.12They slew and ate their horses in despair; And many men and beasts died everywhere.
- B12.15.13At last no hand or arm had strength to rise; The troops lay broken under frozen skies.
