The Watchman Brings Tus the News

From B13.21, Gudarz Hears of Rostam’s Coming. It illustrates B13.21.71–79:

  • B13.21.71
The earth became a sea of pitch-black night;Mars, Venus, Mercury withdrew from sight.
  • B13.21.72
The moon from Pisces rose with silver light,And tore the dark robe down, with all its might.
  • B13.21.73
The watchman hurried down with urgent pace,Like sandarac the color of his face.
  • B13.21.74
He cried to Tus: “An army comes our way,The Shah has sent this force from Iran today.”
  • B13.21.75
Tus laughed among the chiefs when this was heard,Then turned to all renowned and spoke his word:
  • B13.21.76
“Now seek no battle; aid has come in sight; For haste has its own hour, and waiting right.
  • B13.21.77
By Yazdan’s power Rostam Piltan draws near,To bring us aid and strip away our fear.
  • B13.21.78
Then our desire against Turan we shall claim,And toward the sun will rise Iran’s bright fame.”
  • B13.21.79
They ceased to plan the night attack and fight; Both chief and army now grew glad and bright.
