The Watchman Sees Rostam's Banners
From B13.21, Gudarz Hears of Rostam’s Coming. It illustrates B13.21.19–29:
- B13.21.19The Pahlevan then shed his bitter tears,And cried aloud before his gathered peers:
- B13.21.20“Saddle my steed; let brick now be my bed; From this day forth let brick support my head.
- B13.21.21I go once more to fill my eyes with friends,And clasp them close before our fortune ends.
- B13.21.22Shidush and Bijan, Rohham, Giv the bold,I will embrace while arms can clasp and hold.
- B13.21.23Those fiery warriors of noble breed,I will kiss their faces while my lashes bleed.”
- B13.21.24His gallant bay stood saddled at his side,When from the height the watchman loudly cried:
- B13.21.25“Rejoice, world-Pahlevan; let sorrow cease,For aid from Iran comes to bring release.
- B13.21.26A black dust rises on Iran’s road today,And darkens all the daylight on its way.
- B13.21.27Within its heart, bright standards fill the gloom,Like moons that rise above a battle’s plume.
- B13.21.28The first bears wolf-sign, fierce against the sky;The next displays the moon and rides on high.
- B13.21.29The third, a dragon with a lion’s head,In gold, is blazing where the banners spread.”
