Gudarz Weeps on Fariborz's Breast
From B13.23, Fariborz Reaches Mount Hamavan. It illustrates B13.23.4–14:
- B13.23.4Gudarz sprang up; they brought his swiftest bay;He mounted in a breath and rode away.
- B13.23.5He rode toward that dark dust with wounded heart,And searched the road by which the troops would start.
- B13.23.6He reached the van; amid the marching train,He saw Fariborz’s standard on the plain.
- B13.23.7Fariborz, chosen leader of the band,The new Shah’s kinsman, rode at their command.
- B13.23.8Old Gudarz then dismounted from his steed;Wise Fariborz dismounted with all speed.
- B13.23.9The two embraced; Gudarz, with grief oppressed,Wept tears of blood upon the prince’s breast.
- B13.23.10Fariborz said, “Old chief, still forced to wageRevenge for Siavash from age to age,
- B13.23.11How dearly Siavash’s vengeance spent your line!Alas, Gudarzian horsemen, once so fine.
- B13.23.12May glad news of them still return to you;May fortune turn, and make your foemen rue.
- B13.23.13Praise be to Him who rules the sun and moon,That I have found you safe, a gracious boon.”
- B13.23.14Gudarz wept blood for those beneath the clay,For sons and grandsons fallen in the fray.
