The Khan Examines Rostam's Arrow
From B13.28, Rostam Battles Ashkabus. It illustrates B13.28.51–58:
- B13.28.51When Rostam had withdrawn across the plain,The Khan sent out a rider to the slain.
- B13.28.52The rider drew the shaft from where it lay,Blood-darkened to the feathers all the way.
- B13.28.53They passed the shaft throughout the gathered band; All thought a spear had rested in his hand.
- B13.28.54The young Khan saw its feathers and its head; His youthful heart grew old with sudden dread.
- B13.28.55He said to wise Piran, “What is his name?Who is this man among Iran’s men of fame?
- B13.28.56You called them but a remnant, weak and small,Unfit to stand with warriors at all.
- B13.28.57Yet spear-like arrows rest in every hand;A mountain’s heart would shrink before that band.
- B13.28.58You made the matter small in what you said,But falsehood filled the tale that you had spread.”
