Rostam Arms in the Babr-e Bayan
From B13.30, Iran and Turan Prepare for Battle. It illustrates B13.30.22–33 (to B13.30.36):
- B13.30.22Then Rostam to Iran’s warriors declared:“The time has come; for battle be prepared.
- B13.30.23If some were slain, count well the loss we bore:One in two or three hundred, and no more.
- B13.30.24Do not let grief constrict your hearts with pain;I will not live if honor bears a stain.
- B13.30.25With faces ebony-dark, Turan withdrew,When Ashkabus was slain before their view.
- B13.30.26Now fill your hearts with vengeance, warriors all;And knit your brows to answer battle’s call.
- B13.30.27Today I shoe brave Rakhsh and ride to fight; With blood my sword-tip will shine ruby-bright.
- B13.30.28Make ready; here a new day has its birth,And Kay Khosrow’s treasury is all the earth.
- B13.30.29Arm for the strife; win crowns and earrings fair,The spoils of this day’s battle as your share.
- B13.30.30From me take purses, gifts from Zabul’s store,And Kabul’s gifts shall swell your bounty more.”
- B13.30.31The mighty blessed him: “Through you may the crownAnd signet gain in splendor and renown.”
- B13.30.32He donned his armor and, with haughty stride,Went forth to meet the battle’s rising tide.
- B13.30.33Beneath, a jowshan on his body lay,While Babr-e Bayan clothed the whole array.
