Houman Rides Out Against Tus
From B13.8, Tus and Houman Meet in Combat. It illustrates B13.8.1–12 (to B13.8.19):
- B13.8.1Then Houman mounted on his eagle-steed,And spurred toward the field where warriors bleed.
- B13.8.2He seemed an iron wall before their eyes,Or Mount Alborz in jowshan scraping skies.
- B13.8.3He came before the men prepared to fight,And grasped a spear that glittered in the light.
- B13.8.4Tus too advanced; the earth rang far and wide,While brazen karnays thundered at his side.
- B13.8.5He cried: “From luckless Viseh’s root has grownA bitter tree whose wretched fruit is known.
- B13.8.6Have you come mounted, spear in hand, for strife,To seek revenge and hazard here your life?
- B13.8.7By Khosrow’s life, I will then face your might,No jowshan, gorz, or Roman helm in sight.
- B13.8.8Like mountain leopard springing on its prey,I would seize you and drag you down today.
- B13.8.9If you have courage, you shall learn outrightHow heroes meet their enemies in fight.”
- B13.8.10Houman replied: “Do not grow proud in speech;Such arrogance should stand beyond your reach.
- B13.8.11Though fate has struck one luckless chief through you,Do not despise all Turan’s warriors too.
- B13.8.12Arzhang would count himself no warrior then,If measured beside me among brave men.
