Tus and Houman Grapple by the Belt
From B13.8, Tus and Houman Meet in Combat. It illustrates B13.8.64–74:
- B13.8.64Each grasped his massive gorz and charged to fight;Earth reeled beneath them, day dissolved in night.
- B13.8.65A dust-cloud gathered over all the field,And battle’s face was hidden by its shield.
- B13.8.66Dark night appeared to fall upon the day;The world’s bright sun was hidden far away.
- B13.8.67Their mighty gorz all curved like Chakhian bows;Their rings of steel rang thunder from the blows.
- B13.8.68The clash of steel rose upward to the cloud; Its battle-wind reached Shahd, immense and loud.
- B13.8.69Beneath each iron helm seemed stone, not head;Their blows made Death’s own face turn black with dread.
- B13.8.70They took their Indian scimitars in hand,And sparks streamed out from steel and stone and sand.
- B13.8.71Beneath the strength of those two chiefs in fight,The keen blades bent, then shattered in the light.
- B13.8.72Dust-stained and thirsty, each kept an iron hold,Gripped the other’s belt with fingers firm and bold.
- B13.8.73They drove their weight through stirrups in the strain,Yet neither warrior fell upon the plain.
- B13.8.74At last the belt of Houman snapped in two;He leapt upon a charger strong and new.
