Gudarz Warns against Piran's Guile
From B14.7, Rostam Exhorts the Troops. It illustrates B14.7.28–39 (to B14.7.61):
- B14.7.28Gudarz, on hearing, rose and spoke outright:“O generous chief, who follows what is right,
- B14.7.29Pillar of troops, adornment of the throne,Through you the crown and royal helm have shone.
- B14.7.30Your shining wisdom is your spirit’s bread,The wealth by which its living strength is fed.
- B14.7.31Peace is the wiser course; but to begin,Remember that your ox is in its skin.
- B14.7.32I will repeat a saying from old days:Now hear the ancient counsel it conveys.
- B14.7.33As necks draw back when heavy loads increase,So wicked souls draw back from thoughts of peace.
- B14.7.34Piran gives pledges now beneath the strain,But strives to break the peace those vows maintain.
- B14.7.35The Maker shaped him with a double heart;Trust not his words or any guileful art.
- B14.7.36When first we set the armies in array,We held a parley, keeping war at bay.
- B14.7.37An envoy came from him to make it clear,‘I seek no strife, no drawn-out conflict here.
- B14.7.38I want no lands or tents to call my own;I pledge my service to the royal throne.’
- B14.7.39He heard our counsel, then replied, ‘I will goAnd tell my kin the things they need to know.
