Rakhsh Bites the Dragon
From B5.3, Rostam Fights a Dragon. It illustrates B5.3.36–43:
- B5.3.36The dragon grappled fiercely in the fray,But from Tahamtan found no path away.
- B5.3.37It battled him with overwhelming might,And Rakhsh beheld his master pressed in fight.
- B5.3.38But seeing Rostam hard beset and near,He rushed upon the beast and cast off fear.
- B5.3.39He laid his ears back, sprang as lions would,And bit the towering dragon where it stood.
- B5.3.40He tore its shoulder with his sharpened teeth,Like lion’s jaws that rend the flesh beneath.
- B5.3.41At Rakhsh’s deed great Rostam stared amazed,To see his steed against the dragon raised.
- B5.3.42Then Rostam struck with one resounding blow; His flashing blade laid low the monstrous foe.
- B5.3.43The severed head fell crashing to the plain,And blood poured forth like rivers after rain.
