Sudabeh Defies Her Father's Men
From B6.3, Hamavaran’s King Imprisons Kavus. It illustrates B6.3.45–55:
- B6.3.45Two veiled companies came to fetch the bride,A splendid litter moving at their side.
- B6.3.46They trampled down the tents in cruel display,And bore her from the ruined camp away.
- B6.3.47When she beheld them come, she cried aloud,And rent her robes before the watching crowd.
- B6.3.48She tore her musk-black hair, a kamand strand,And clawed her cheeks with her own anguished hand.
- B6.3.49She cried: “True men would scorn so foul a deed;No noble heart would praise the path you lead.
- B6.3.50Why not confront him when the battle shone,Jowshan his robe, his charger for a throne?
- B6.3.51When Giv, Gudarz, and Tus stood in array,The koust resounded through the battle day,
- B6.3.52You made the golden throne an ambush-place,And stained this bond of kinship with disgrace.”
- B6.3.53She called them dogs as blood and tears ran red,Across her rose-like cheeks where grief had spread.
- B6.3.54“I will not leave Kay Kavus in his chain,Though in a darkened grave he should remain.
- B6.3.55If Kavus bears the chain, then strike me dead;I am innocent; take instead my head.”
