Gudarz Turns Rostam Back
From B8.13, Kavus’s Anger at Rostam. It illustrates B8.13.99–110:
- B8.13.99Then Gudarz spoke with sharpened, subtle art:“Men say you fear this youth with lion’s heart.
- B8.13.100They whisper: ‘Rostam shrinks from Sohrab’s might; His courage fails before the coming fight.’
- B8.13.101They say Gazhdaham read the danger clear; That even Rostam now gives ground to fear.
- B8.13.102If Rostam fears him, who can hold the field? Then you and I should both withdraw and yield.
- B8.13.103Will you permit such slander to remain,And let base tongues your hard-won honor stain?
- B8.13.104Sohrab is all the court will speak of now;Your fame is judged by what you do, and how.
- B8.13.105The army now is hard pressed in this fight;Do not make crown and throne grow dark tonight.
- B8.13.106From Turan comes a shame we cannot hide; Will you not rise and turn the rising tide?”
- B8.13.107Tahamtan stared, astonished by the claim; Then wounded honor kindled into flame.
- B8.13.108The hero’s spirit flared at that sharp blow:“I fear no man, as all the nations know.
- B8.13.109I turned away from insult, not from fight;Let none mistake my purpose or my right.”
- B8.13.110He turned his steed and rode back through the gate,Kay Kavus rose himself and did not wait.
