Rostam Strikes Down Tus
From B8.13, Kavus’s Anger at Rostam. It illustrates B8.13.16–26:
- B8.13.16Tus stepped ahead and seized him by the hand,To lead him out, obeying the command.
- B8.13.17But Rostam, rising fierce in sudden flame,Replied in words that put the court to shame:
- B8.13.18“Your every deed grows worse with each new choice; No king should rule by fury in his voice.
- B8.13.19Kingship does not suit the course you take;A ruler’s wrath should not the kingdom shake.
- B8.13.20Hang that Turk alive if you crave display,Then turn your rage upon the field of fray.
- B8.13.21Rum, Sagzar, Mesr, Chin have yielded ground;Mazandaran, Hamavaran were bound.
- B8.13.22All these lie prostrate under Rakhsh’s tread,Their hearts by sword and crossbow struck with dread.
- B8.13.23You live through me; then turn your rage from me;Let war receive the fury you set free.”
- B8.13.24In fury Rostam struck Tus with his hand;Tus reeled beneath a blow he could not stand.
- B8.13.25As when a raging elephant might poundA tabira; headfirst Tus crashed to ground.
- B8.13.26Then Rostam strode beyond the royal hall,And left in rage before the eyes of all.
