Sohrab Points Out the Green Pavilion

Sohrab Points Out the Green Pavilion

From B8.16, Sohrab Questions Hajir on Iran’s Chiefs. It illustrates B8.16.34–45 (to B8.16.51):

  • B8.16.34
“Now there,” said Sohrab, “green pavilions rise,With ordered troops drawn up before my eyes.
  • B8.16.35
A throne is raised where Kaveh’s flag appears;A giant warrior sits among his peers.
  • B8.16.36
His shoulders vast, his stature raised in height,He stands a head above the gathered might.
  • B8.16.37
Before him stands a charger fierce and tall,A beast that seems to thunder over all.
  • B8.16.38
The charger roars until the ranks recoil; You would think the sea beneath its feet would boil.
  • B8.16.39
His kamand hangs down to the charger’s feet,Prepared for any champion it may meet.
  • B8.16.40
Armored elephants stand before his place,While he sits restless, fire upon his face.
  • B8.16.41
No man in Iran rises to his height; No horse like his appears within my sight.
  • B8.16.42
A dragon marks the banner at his side; What chief is this of such commanding pride?
  • B8.16.43
Above the dragon, on the spearpoint high,A golden lion gleams against the sky.”
  • B8.16.44
Hajir thought deeply: “If I now reveal,This youth may strike before our wounds can heal.
  • B8.16.45
Far better hide him than betray the land;Let silence guard the strength at Iran’s hand.”
