Rostam's Night Charge to Zavareh
From B8.19, Rostam and Sohrab Leave the Field. It illustrates B8.19.60–71 (to B8.19.81):
- B8.19.60Then Zavareh came near with wounded heart:“How went today’s fight for you from the start?”
- B8.19.61Rostam first asked for food and ate his fill,Then washed troubling thought from heart and will.
- B8.19.62He told his brother: “Keep your senses clear;Be watchful; do not let rash haste draw near.
- B8.19.63At early dawn, when I go to the plainTo meet that Turk whose challenge does not wane,
- B8.19.64Bring forth my army, standard, throne of state,And golden boots; have everything await.
- B8.19.65Stand massed before my royal tent and gate,When from the east the risen sun stands straight.
- B8.19.66If I prevail when battle is begun,I will not linger when the field is won.
- B8.19.67But if the matter turns another way,Do not lament or give your hearts to dismay.
- B8.19.68Let not one man ride out to take my stead;Seek no new battle if you find me dead.
- B8.19.69Go all together back to Zabul’s plain;Seek out Dastan; from new battle refrain.
- B8.19.70And you, make my dear mother’s heart content:‘This judgment Yazdan on my head has sent.’
- B8.19.71Tell her: ‘Do not bind your heart to mine,Nor grieve forever after my decline.
