Sohrab Offers Peace at Dawn
From B8.20, Sohrab Casts Rostam Down. It illustrates B8.20.20–31 (to B8.20.32):
- B8.20.20At break of dawn the sun began to rise,And waking warriors opened battle-eyes.
- B8.20.21Sohrab put on his khaftan for the fight; His head held war, his heart the feast’s delight.
- B8.20.22He came roaring across the battlefield,An ox-headed gorz his mighty hand would wield.
- B8.20.23He came to Rostam smiling, free of guile,As though last night they shared the feast awhile.
- B8.20.24“How passed your night? How fares your strength today? Why turn again toward strife and bloody fray?
- B8.20.25Cast down your gorz and sword; lay vengeance by;Let hatred fade and anger’s fire die.
- B8.20.26Come, let us leave this battlefield aside,And feast together, seated side by side.
- B8.20.27Let wine restore the spirit and the mind,And leave the rage of war and death behind.
- B8.20.28Before the World-Creator turn from blood,And choose a path kept clean of war’s dark flood.
- B8.20.29My heart turns toward you with a strange accord;Shame wets my face before I lift the sword.
- B8.20.30Reveal yourself; concealment brings no gain;A worthy man should speak his name out plain.
- B8.20.31Tell me your lineage, speak and make it known; What house and heritage you call your own.
