Sohrab Casts Rostam Down
From B8.20, Sohrab Casts Rostam Down. It illustrates B8.20.48–59 (to B8.20.60):
- B8.20.48At last Sohrab surged forward like a wave,With sudden force no mortal strength could brave.
- B8.20.49He seized the girdle with a sudden strength,And wrenched so hard the field shook through its length.
- B8.20.50He gave a cry that shook the battleground; It seemed earth’s face had split beneath the sound.
- B8.20.51He raised the hero, hurled him to the ground,With all his mighty weight and force profound.
- B8.20.52He pinned him like a lion with its kill,A male Gur-e-Khar helpless to its will.
- B8.20.53Dust filled the air and covered Rostam’s face,As Sohrab held him firmly in that place.
- B8.20.54Then Sohrab drew his water-blue khanjar bright,Prepared to sever Rostam’s head outright.
- B8.20.55But Rostam cried: “O lion-catcher, stay;O kamand-thrower, hear what I must say.
- B8.20.56For gorz and sword and arrow, custom knowsA law our fathers kept against their foes.
- B8.20.57One fall alone gives no man leave to kill;A second throw must prove the victor still.
- B8.20.58Only the second fall permits the blow; Then custom grants the right to slay the foe.
- B8.20.59No man will call this killing foul or base;Among our ranks, such custom has its place.”
