Rostam Prays Beside the Stream
From B8.20, Sohrab Casts Rostam Down. It illustrates B8.20.78–88:
- B8.20.78But Rostam rose, a cypress as before,Released from Sohrab’s grip and death’s dark door.
- B8.20.79He sought a running stream with weary tread,Like one whose soul returned to one thought dead.
- B8.20.80He drank and washed the dust from head and frame,Then prayed before the World-Creator’s name.
- B8.20.81He did not know what sun and moon designed,Nor what the hidden portion they assigned.
- B8.20.82Nor how the turning heavens would descend,And strip his crown when fortune reached its end.
- B8.20.83Men say the Maker gave him strength so great,His feet sank deep in stone beneath his weight.
- B8.20.84That boundless strength became a crushing load;He prayed to Yazdan as he walked the road.
- B8.20.85Pure Yazdan heard and eased his mountain frame,And curbed the strength no mortal force could tame.
- B8.20.86But facing Sohrab, fear had pierced his heart; He sought the strength that once had set him apart.
- B8.20.87He prayed once more: “Pure Yazdan, strength restore;Grant me the power that once I held before.”
- B8.20.88Pure Yazdan heard, and strength returned, and grew; His limbs regained the mighty force they knew.
