Tahmineh Enters by Candlelight
From B8.4, Tahmineh Seeks Out Rostam. It illustrates B8.4.1–11:
- B8.4.1At deep of night, while morning star rode high,A secret murmur moved beneath the sky.
- B8.4.2The chamber door swung softly and then turned,And amber-scented candlelight there burned.
- B8.4.3A handmaid entered, stately, calm, and bright,And bore the perfumed candle through the night.
- B8.4.4Behind her came a maiden moon-faced, fair,Sun-bright, with color, fragrance in the air.
- B8.4.5Her brows were bows; her dark hair streamed behind,Like coils of kamand in the night entwined.
- B8.4.6Tall as a cypress, straight in form and height,She entered softly in the chamber light.
- B8.4.7Her cheeks like Yemeni agate burned,Her mouth as narrow as a heart that yearned.
- B8.4.8Her soul was wisdom, spirit filled her frame; No earthly dust seemed mingled with her flame.
- B8.4.9Brave Rostam marveled at the wondrous sight,Blessed Yazdan, then addressed her in the night:
- B8.4.10“Who are you, coming here while others sleep? What do you seek, what purpose do you keep?”
- B8.4.11She said: “Tahmineh is the name I bear;Grief split my heart in two and left it bare.
