The Battle at the Gates of Balkh
From B9.16, Siavash Leads the Army. It illustrates B9.16.47–53:
- B9.16.47Meanwhile, Siavash wasted not a day,But drove his army wind-like on its way.
- B9.16.48The Iranian army pressed with sudden speed; No time remained to pause or take good heed.
- B9.16.49Garsivaz saw no path but to engage,And drove his forces forward in their rage.
- B9.16.50Beside the gates of Balkh the armies met,And closed in battle where their lines were set.
- B9.16.51Three days they fought with fury side by side; The fourth day brought the change in battle’s tide.
- B9.16.52Then Siavash sent footmen to each gate,And through them poured a mighty force in weight.
- B9.16.53Sipahram fled and crossed the river’s course,And came to Afrasiab with broken force.
