Father and Son Part in Tears
From B9.16, Siavash Leads the Army. It illustrates B9.16.12–23 (to B9.16.27):
- B9.16.12Five Mobadan raised Kaveh’s sign on high,Its ancient splendor mounting toward the sky.
- B9.16.13He ordered all the army toward the plain,And rank on rank advanced across the terrain.
- B9.16.14So thick they stood, the earth itself seemed gone;Only the horses’ hooves appeared thereon.
- B9.16.15The banner of Kaveh mounted toward the sky,And shone among them like the moon on high.
- B9.16.16Kavus rode out and circled every rank,Reviewing all from center out to flank.
- B9.16.17He saw the army like a bride arrayed,With kousts and war-elephants all displayed.
- B9.16.18The Shah then blessed the army where it stood:“O men whose names are honored, brave and good,
- B9.16.19May fortune march beside you as you go,And darken every face that stands as foe.
- B9.16.20Go forth in health beneath a favored star,Return victorious, honored as you are.”
- B9.16.21Tabiras on the elephants were bound;Siavash gave command and mounted sound.
- B9.16.22The Shah rode one full day beside his son,His tearful eyes on him till day was done.
- B9.16.23Then father and his son embraced in woe,And wept like springtime clouds whose waters flow.
