Siavash Asks to Lead the War
From B9.15, News of Afrasiab Reaches Kavus. It illustrates B9.15.19–29:
- B9.15.19Then Siavash pondered long and found no rest;A forest thick with thoughts grew in his breast.
- B9.15.20He said: “This war I will myself command,And beg the Shah to place it in my hand.
- B9.15.21Perhaps the Just One frees me from this mireOf Sudabeh and contention with my sire.
- B9.15.22To trap so vast an army in my snareWould win a lasting name for me to bear.”
- B9.15.23He girded at the waist and sought the throne,And said: “This battlefield I make my own.
- B9.15.24I go to face the Shah of Turan’s force,And cast his chiefs to dust along my course.”
- B9.15.25The World-Creator had ordained his fate,That death in Turan for the prince would wait.
- B9.15.26Through counsel of an evil-hearted man,His fortune would turn back from where it ran.
- B9.15.27His father gave consent; his heart grew bright,And granted Siavash command to fight.
- B9.15.28He drew him close and honored him still more,And raised him higher than he stood before.
- B9.15.29He said: “My treasures all are yours to spend,And all my army yours to lead and send.”
