Rostam Storms from the Court
From B9.26, Kavus Dispatches Rostam to Sistan. It illustrates B9.26.1–12 (to B9.26.14):
- B9.26.1Then Kay Kavus, in wrath, with blazing eyes,Turned fiercely on Rostam with bitter cries.
- B9.26.2“The truth stands plain at last for all to see;No longer can this matter hidden be.
- B9.26.3You set this counsel firmly in his head,And tore revenge out by the root instead.
- B9.26.4You sought your own ease, not the royal gain,Nor crown, nor throne, nor seal of Iran’s reign.
- B9.26.5Remain here now; no more shall you command;Let Tus now lead the forces of the land.
- B9.26.6A swift courier to Balkh I now shall send,With bitter words within the letter penned.
- B9.26.7If Siavash will not obey my call,Let him yield up the army, men and all.
- B9.26.8Let Tus command; let Siavash return,With chosen men, and what awaits him learn.
- B9.26.9Then let the prince before my throne appear,And see from me what treatment fits him here.
- B9.26.10No longer shall I call you friend of mine,Nor ask you now to lead my battle line.”
- B9.26.11Then Rostam cried, his anger fierce and high:“If Tus is Rostam in your royal eye,
- B9.26.12Then count me vanished from the world of men,And reckon Rostam dead among you then.”
