Siavash Strikes the Ball toward the Moon
From B9.33, Siavash Displays His Prowess before Afrasiab. It illustrates B9.33.35–41:
- B9.33.35The king commanded: “Bring another ball,”And had it set before the prince and all.
- B9.33.36He raised and kissed the ball before the crowd,The ney and koust together sounded loud.
- B9.33.37He mounted then a fresh and eager steed,And tossed the ball in hand with practiced heed.
- B9.33.38Then with his chowgan struck it toward the moon,As though the sky would claim the ball too soon.
- B9.33.39The ball itself then vanished from their sight,As though the heavens drew it toward their height.
- B9.33.40No rider there could match him in the race,Nor any shine with such a joyful face.
- B9.33.41The king laughed loud, the nobles cried in praise,And marveled at the prince before their gaze.
