Siavash Strings the Bow Garsivaz Could Not
From B9.33, Siavash Displays His Prowess before Afrasiab. It illustrates B9.33.59–68:
- B9.33.59The prince then took his Kayan bow, and raisedIt from its case before them as they gazed.
- B9.33.60The king then asked to see the mighty bow,And had a servant bring it forth to show.
- B9.33.61He took it, marveled at its strength and size,And praised the bow before the watching eyes.
- B9.33.62He gave it then to Garsivaz: “Now try,And bend and string this bow before my eye.”
- B9.33.63But all in vain; his utmost could not bringThat stubborn bow to bend, or brace the string.
- B9.33.64Siavash took it, bent it with his hand,And strung it smoothly, smiling where he scanned.
- B9.33.65The king declared: “Such bows demand the mightOf youthful arms to bend and string them right.
- B9.33.66In youth I too had strength; my arm was bold,But age has stolen it; I have grown old.
- B9.33.67No man in Iran or Turan, in war’s days,Could wield this bow and win such lasting praise.
- B9.33.68Save him whose chest and shoulders bear such might; No other arm could bend and string it tight.”
