Siavash Cleaves the Wild Ass
From B9.33, Siavash Displays His Prowess before Afrasiab. It illustrates B9.33.90–97:
- B9.33.90One day they rode; the king brought hawks to fly,While hunting cheetahs bounded swiftly by.
- B9.33.91From Iran and from Turan riders came,And all assembled, eager for the game.
- B9.33.92The prince saw Gur-e-Khar upon the plain,And darted forth, and gave his steed the rein.
- B9.33.93His rein grew light, his stirrup pressed with weight,Through hill and hollow flew his charging gait.
- B9.33.94He struck a Gur-e-Khar and clove it clean,His flashing blade cut through with edge so keen.
- B9.33.95He judged the halves and found their balance true,Not one grain’s weight could part the equal two.
- B9.33.96The king and all his train looked on amazed,And praised the strength and skill the prince displayed.
- B9.33.97They cried: “What master stands before our eyes!”And gazed in silent wonder and surprise.
