Khosrow Before Afrasiab
From B9.59, Kay Khosrow Comes before Afrasiab. It illustrates B9.59.36–47:
- B9.59.36Afrasiab wept with shame to see the youth; His tears betrayed the burden of the truth.
- B9.59.37He marked his royal stature, strength, and grace,His branch-like form and farr upon his face.
- B9.59.38He gazed a while; the color left his cheek,And in the royal hall no one would speak.
- B9.59.39Then Piran trembled like a willow tree,And feared the youth would never leave there free.
- B9.59.40The monarch’s face at last grew soft and mild,And Time set love within him for the child.
- B9.59.41“O shepherd youth,” the monarch said, “declare:What know you of the world and its affair?
- B9.59.42How do you fare among the grazing sheep? What paths across the earth do shepherds keep?”
- B9.59.43Khosrow replied: “No game is mine to chase; No bow or feathered arrow serves that place.”
- B9.59.44The king then asked: “Who taught you what you know? What good or evil does Time’s turning show?”
- B9.59.45He said: “Where leopards strike, a warrior bleeds;Their claws can tear his heart despite his deeds.”
- B9.59.46Again the king asked: “Parents, eyvan, home,Your city, food, and sleep; where do you roam?”
- B9.59.47Khosrow replied: “A raging lion, fierce and grim,No fighting dog can ever master him.”
