Akvan Lifts Rostam into the Sky
From C1.4, Akvan Flings Rostam into the Sea. It illustrates C1.4.1–12:
- C1.4.1When from afar Akvan saw Rostam sleep,He came like wind across the meadow’s sweep.
- C1.4.2He dug the earth around where Rostam lay,Then raised the ground and bore it far away.
- C1.4.3When Rostam woke, his heart was seized with dread,And fear and wonder through his spirit spread.
- C1.4.4He thought: “This foul Div’s cunning has prevailed; My sword and strength in empty air have failed.
- C1.4.5Alas my heart, my strength, my arm!” he cried;“The world is wrecked if I am cast aside.
- C1.4.6If he destroys me, all my strength outdone,The world will grieve, for Akvan’s will has won.
- C1.4.7Afrasiab shall gain his heart’s desire;Iran’s bright throne and crown will fall to fire.
- C1.4.8Tus, Gudarz, and Khosrow shall be no more,No tabiras, no elephants of war.
- C1.4.9Through me the world will suffer grief and woe;Who now will strike this cursed and cunning foe?”
- C1.4.10Then Akvan said to Rostam in his plight:“O Piltan, name your wish from this great height.
- C1.4.11Choose where to fall before I let you go:Which place would you prefer, so far below?
- C1.4.12Shall I cast you on mountains or the wave?Where will you fall, far from your comrades brave?”
