Rostam Slays Akvan the Div

Rostam Slays Akvan the Div

From C1.5, Rostam Slays Akvan the Div. It illustrates C1.5.21–30:

  • C1.5.21
Then Akvan came before him, fierce and proud,And challenged him with bitter words aloud:
  • C1.5.22
“Have you not had your fill of grief and strife? You fled the sea and nahang’s claw with life.
  • C1.5.23
You have returned to meet me in the fray; Now learn what fate has written for today.
  • C1.5.24
No further battle shall your spirit know;No sword again from your strong hand shall go.”
  • C1.5.25
When peerless Rostam heard the Div’s loud cry,He roared back like a lion to the sky.
  • C1.5.26
He loosed the twisted kamand from its ring,And cast it round the Div in one swift swing.
  • C1.5.27
Then Rostam twisted round within his seat,And raised his gorz to make the stroke complete.
  • C1.5.28
As though he swung a hammer in his hand,He smashed the Div and hurled him to the sand.
  • C1.5.29
He crushed his head and brain with one fierce blow,Then leapt to earth beside his fallen foe.
  • C1.5.30
The water-blue khanjar he drew, and throughThe Div’s thick neck he cut it, clean and true.
