The Chiefs of Iran Greet Rostam on the Road
From C2.17, Rostam Comes to Khosrow. It illustrates C2.17.27–37:
- C2.17.27Then Kay Khosrow commanded every sage,The Khosrow-born, the freemen of his age,
- C2.17.28To join the court and greet him on the way,Who came obedient to the Shah that day.
- C2.17.29They summoned Tus, Gudarz of Keshvad’s line,And Farhad, honored where the brave men shine.
- C2.17.30Two parts in three of all the champions rose,Exalted heads, and slayers of their foes.
- C2.17.31After Kay Kavus’s rite they came and dressedThe greeting-train in all its ancient best.
- C2.17.32The world grew azure-dim beneath their dust,The standards streamed; the chargers onward thrust.
- C2.17.33When they drew near, they halted in acclaim,Dismounted, bowed, and hailed great Rostam’s name.
- C2.17.34The World-Pahlevan lighted from his ride,And Pahlevans bowed low on every side.
- C2.17.35He asked of each: how does the Shah remain,That turning sun, that moon without a wane?
- C2.17.36The chiefs took seat; and Rostam on his horseShone like Azargashasp along their course.
- C2.17.37And from that place toward the Shah they pressed,With Rostam at the forefront of the rest.
