Rostam Hides His Ring in the Roasted Bird
From C2.22, Manijeh Seeks Out Rostam. It illustrates C2.22.47–54:
- C2.22.47The tears of tenderness ran down his face; Then Rostam spoke to her with gentle grace:
- C2.22.48“Fair one, why not seek nobles who might pleadBefore your father for you in your need?
- C2.22.49Perhaps his love will stir, his liver burn,And pity for his child at last return.
- C2.22.50Were not your father’s anger in the way,I would give more than measure could convey.”
- C2.22.51He told the cooks to bring the food she sought,And every dish at hand was quickly brought.
- C2.22.52He had a roasted bird brought hot and spreadAbout that bird a wrap of tender bread.
- C2.22.53His hand moved like a pari’s, swift and light;Inside the bird he hid his ring from sight.
- C2.22.54He gave it her: “Take this to him below; You guide the helpless in their time of woe.”
