Rostam in Disguise Presents Gifts to Piran
From C2.21, Rostam Goes to Khutan to Piran. It illustrates C2.21.25–36 (to C2.21.39):
- C2.21.25He bowed and said: “O prince whose fame and worthAre known through Iran and Turan on earth,
- C2.21.26Your grace and crown are peerless in the land; You grace the throne, the king’s own guiding hand.”
- C2.21.27The Maker shaped his features by His grace;By God’s decree Piran knew not his face,
- C2.21.28But asked him: “Who are you, and from what place? How have you come here at so swift a pace?”
- C2.21.29He said: “I am your subject; by decree,God grants my living in your town to me.
- C2.21.30I crossed a long and grievous road for gain,From Iran into Turan with my train.
- C2.21.31I buy and sell whatever merchants bear,And bring you wares both valuable and rare.
- C2.21.32My soul has trusted in your love and name;Hope’s power drew my heart toward your fame.
- C2.21.33If now the Pahlevan will grant me shade,I shall sell gems and buy livestock in trade.
- C2.21.34Through your just rule no hand will do me wrong;May clouds of love rain gems on me for long.”
- C2.21.35Then Rostam laid before the prince’s eyesThe cup, amid the chiefs, a royal prize.
- C2.21.36The Arab steeds were splendid, sleek and fair;No wind could leave its dust upon a hair.
