Rostam Taunts Afrasiab before the Lines
From C2.26, Afrasiab Comes against Rostam. It illustrates C2.26.33–44 (to C2.26.49):
- C2.26.33When Afrasiab beheld that vast array,And Rostam set to lead the coming fray,
- C2.26.34He donned his battle-khaftan, dismayed in mind,And bade his troops halt where they stood aligned.
- C2.26.35He formed opposing ranks; earth passed from view,And all the air turned deep indigo blue.
- C2.26.36The left wing he entrusted to Piran;Brave Houman took the right against Iran.
- C2.26.37The center Shideh and Garsivaz would guide,While Afrasiab looked out on every side.
- C2.26.38Then matchless Rostam moved about the field,A sable mountain, jowshan-clad, with shield.
- C2.26.39He cried, “Ill-fated Turk, whose deeds bring shameTo country, crown, and throne, and all their fame!
- C2.26.40You have no heart for battle, feel no stainOf shame before the chiefs who serve your reign.
- C2.26.41Why bring so many men to make a stand,And spread your horses over all the land?
- C2.26.42When armies close, I know what I shall see:Your back turned from the clash, away from me.
- C2.26.43Have you not heard the ancient words of Zal,The saying he recalled and told to all?
- C2.26.44No lion fears wild asses, weak or strong,Though they should fill a plain, a countless throng.
