Piran Finds Bijan beneath the Gibbet
From C2.9, Piran Pleads for Bijan’s Life. It illustrates C2.9.2–13:
- C2.9.2While men prepared the gibbet by decree,Piran, by chance, approached the place to see.
- C2.9.3He reached the road and saw, on every side,Turks with their belts girt fast in martial pride.
- C2.9.4A lofty gibbet had been set upright,A kamand hanging from it, coiled and tight.
- C2.9.5He asked the Turanians: “For whom prepared?Whose death has now the angry king declared?”
- C2.9.6Then Garsivaz replied: “It is Bijan,Foe of Turan and champion of Iran.”
- C2.9.7Piran urged on his charger, drawing near,And found Bijan struck deep by grief and fear.
- C2.9.8He saw him naked, both hands bound behind,With parched mouth, sallow cheek, and troubled mind.
- C2.9.9Piran asked: “By what road did you set out? From Iran, and for blood, beyond a doubt.”
- C2.9.10Bijan told all the pain he had endured,And how his false companion had him lured.
- C2.9.11Piran took pity, weeping as he spoke,And ordered them to spare him from the stroke.
- C2.9.12“Keep him from harm until I reach the throne;I go to make his desperate plight known.
- C2.9.13That I may see the king with my own eye,And show to him the good star’s road on high.”
