The Army Weeps as Gudarz Rides Out
From C3.26, The Battle of Eleven Rukhs Is Arranged. It illustrates C3.26.100–111 (to C3.26.112):
- C3.26.100He bade the troops to mount for coming fight,And draw their belts for vengeance firm and tight.
- C3.26.101He gave the left, where Rohham used to stand,To bright-faced Farhad and his chosen band.
- C3.26.102Where Fariborz had held the right in place,He stationed Katmareh, of Gharan’s race.
- C3.26.103Then to Shidush he said, “O son of mine,Whose counsel serves me well in each design,
- C3.26.104With Kaveh’s standard and the troops, remain;Stand firm behind the army on the plain.”
- C3.26.105He then commanded Gostaham: “Now go,Lead forth the army, guard it from the foe.
- C3.26.106You shall hold charge here in the chief’s own place,And shield the army’s rear from all disgrace.”
- C3.26.107He bade the troops remain in their own ground;Let none advance beyond the posts they found.
- C3.26.108They were to bless brave Gostaham’s command,And stay in saddle, ready, all the band.
- C3.26.109A cry rose through the army, van to rear; They wept there on the field for all to hear.
- C3.26.110They rushed toward Gudarz, every noble headBowed down as dust upon their crowns they spread.
- C3.26.111“O chief of chiefs, may victory attendYour prowess on this field from start to end.
