Piran Parts from His Brothers
From C3.27, Piran Exhorts His Champions. It illustrates C3.27.35–45:
- C3.27.35To Farshidvard and Lahhak Piran spoke:“Great chiefs, guard Turan from the coming stroke.
- C3.27.36The safety of the army on this fieldMust be your care; stand firm, its living shield.
- C3.27.37Set there a watchman on the mountain height,To scan the field while day affords him light.
- C3.27.38There let him keep his vigil through the night,And count the stars until the dawn grows bright.
- C3.27.39If ill should come from heaven’s turning sky,And all its favor wholly pass us by,
- C3.27.40Then hurry back to Turan; let your flightBe swift as smoke when fortune turns to spite.
- C3.27.41No others of our house are left to stand;Time felled our mighty warriors with its hand.
- C3.27.42What can I teach of time and all its ways?Time is itself the teacher of our days.”
- C3.27.43They clasped each other, weeping in their pain,Then turned away, their bitter tears like rain.
- C3.27.44They parted from the ranks with cries of grief,And loud lament accompanied each chief.
- C3.27.45Then Piran, filled with vengeance, rode back out,And reached the field with his loud battle-shout.
