Two Silver-Haired Chiefs Parley
From C3.28, Gudarz and Piran Choose the Warriors. It illustrates C3.28.17–28 (to C3.28.32):
- C3.28.17Gudarz heard, seeing how the turning skyHad darkened all the hope in Piran’s eye.
- C3.28.18He praised the Omnipotent with heart and tongue,Then called to mind the Shah, heroic, young.
- C3.28.19He answered: “Famous chief, I heard it all,And now shall answer plainly to your call.
- C3.28.20What gain did Siavash’s blood provideFor Afrasiab? Let justice be your guide.
- C3.28.21Like sheep they slew him, severing his head,His heart was blood, his wounded spirit bled.
- C3.28.22Thereafter Afrasiab made Iran cryWith raids and slaughter cast beneath the sky.
- C3.28.23Siavash trusted in the oath you swore; You cast his life away and thought no more.
- C3.28.24Then when my son approached with words of peace,You chose the sword and bade all parleys cease.
- C3.28.25In fiery haste you armed your men to fight,And barred the road to peace with all your might.
- C3.28.26My prayer to Him who rules the world and skyHas risen true and secretly on high:
- C3.28.27That I might meet you one day, blade to blade; Now you have come; let us not be delayed.
- C3.28.28So let us two, with silvered heads, contendUpon this field, and bring the quarrel’s end.
