Houman Demands Leave to Fight
From C3.8, Houman Seeks Leave for Battle. It illustrates C3.8.1–12 (to C3.8.13):
- C3.8.1From Turan’s ranks brave Houman came in stride,A lion as he reached his brother’s side.
- C3.8.2He said, “Afrasiab’s Pahlevan, we waitImpatient on this plain; the hour grows late.
- C3.8.3The seventh day has come; each rider hereStands belted, armed for battle with his spear.
- C3.8.4Their waists are chafed by jowshans; hearts demandRevenge, their eyes fixed on Iran’s land.
- C3.8.5Why hold the forces drawn up face to face? What is your purpose in this waiting place?
- C3.8.6Speak now: if you intend to fight, then fight; If you would leave, why linger here in sight?
- C3.8.7O Pahlevan, delay will stain your name; And all the world will laugh to see your shame.
- C3.8.8These are the men who fled before our might,Disgraced and scattered in their former flight.
- C3.8.9Their slain filled all the ground; the whole earth bled,And blood ran everywhere about the dead.
- C3.8.10No famed horseman is missing from our band;Nor does great Rostam hold their chief command.
- C3.8.11If you have no desire for blood to flow,And will not rouse the troops against the foe,
- C3.8.12Choose warriors; place their reins beneath my hand,And watch me wage this war across the land.”
