Afrasiab Finds Rostam Awake
From C4.16, Gang-Behesht Shelters Afrasiab. It illustrates C4.16.44–49:
- C4.16.44When Afrasiab drew near the city wall,He thought: “Now Rostam sleeps, and hears no call.
- C4.16.45At night I strike his army where it lies,And make the dust above his army rise.”
- C4.16.46But in the gloom he saw the outposts set,And heard the chargers neigh through darkness yet.
- C4.16.47He marveled at the watchful Rostam’s skill,And rode on, deep in thought and anxious still.
- C4.16.48He knew his troops were beaten and distressed,And life itself was struggling in each breast.
- C4.16.49Rostam stood armed before him on the road;Behind, the Shah and all his horsemen rode.
