The Storm Blinds the Turkish Host
From C4.29, Afrasiab’s Night Attack Fails. It illustrates C4.29.41–52 (to C4.29.55):
- C4.29.41Then rose a mighty blast with deafening sound,A storm beyond all memory swept the ground.
- C4.29.42It lifted dust and drove it through the skies,Against the Turkish faces and their eyes.
- C4.29.43It tore the helmets from the heads it passed;Afrasiab stood astounded by the blast;
- C4.29.44Across the field lay brains and blood outspread;The rocks, like jujubes, gleamed a bloody red.
- C4.29.45The Turkish riders, in their days of ease,Had hunted leopards just as they might please.
- C4.29.46Now none would fight the turning sky’s command,While dust rose thick across the battered land.
- C4.29.47When Khosrow saw the wind and dust arise,And joy return before his warriors’ eyes,
- C4.29.48With Rostam, Giv, Gudarz, and Tus, the kingBade tabiras in the army’s center ring.
- C4.29.49The army’s center raised the battle-cry;The Shah and Rostam flanked the army nearby.
- C4.29.50The dust hung heavy like a storm-cloud’s veil,And shafts and sword-blades fell from it as hail.
- C4.29.51On every side lay mountain-heaps of slain,With springs of blood that ran from mound to plain.
- C4.29.52The air grew dark, deep indigo overhead;Below, a sea of blood engulfed the dead.
