Afrasiab Casts Down His Crown
From C4.3, Afrasiab Hears of Piran’s Death. It illustrates C4.3.31–38:
- C4.3.31The monarch heard and stood aghast with dread; His eyes and heart grew dark at what they said.
- C4.3.32He came down wailing from the ivory seat,And cast his crown down at his chieftains’ feet.
- C4.3.33A cry of anguish rose from all his men;The nobles’ cheeks grew pale with sorrow then.
- C4.3.34They cleared the strangers from the royal tent,And for his kinsmen, all of them, they sent.
- C4.3.35Afrasiab wept and tore his hair in pain,While tears streamed down his face like falling rain.
- C4.3.36“O world-seeing one, my Ruyin,” he cried,“My noble horseman, once my strength and pride!
- C4.3.37Lahhak and Farshidvard, my chiefs of might,My horsemen, who will ride no more to fight!
- C4.3.38No son or brother now is left to stand; No chief, no army, no one to command!”
