Afrasiab at the Shore of Zereh
From C4.31, Afrasiab Crosses the Sea. It illustrates C4.31.5–12:
- C4.31.5From Chin he came to Zereh’s sea in pain,His loins rubbed raw by knots and travel’s strain.
- C4.31.6When he had reached that deep and shoreless tide,With neither middle nor an ending spied,
- C4.31.7The sailor said: “O king, no passage liesAcross this deep sea spread before your eyes.
- C4.31.8I am now seventy-eight; through all my days,No ship has crossed these waters’ trackless ways.”
- C4.31.9Then mighty Afrasiab answered so:“Blessed is he whom waters overthrow.
- C4.31.10If no foe’s sword can claim my dying breath,No foe shall seize me, even after death.”
- C4.31.11He ordered captains under his commandTo launch enough ships from the waiting strand.
- C4.31.12They set their sails toward Gangdezh through the spray,And turned from good and ill upon their way.
