Shideh Begs to Face Khosrow
From C4.5, Shideh Appears before His Father. It illustrates C4.5.46–57 (to C4.5.58):
- C4.5.46Then Shideh said: “If thus you seek the fight,Let me go first to prove a champion’s might.
- C4.5.47I overthrow the steeds that face my ire,A brazen elephant in battle’s fire.
- C4.5.48I know no man whose charger in the frayCould cast its dust upon my horse today.
- C4.5.49I long for single combat with Khosrow,Because he is the new king men now know.
- C4.5.50If he should come to meet me in the fight,He shall not slip my grasp or take to flight.
- C4.5.51The heart and back of Iran both shall break,And all their hopes shall tremble in my wake.
- C4.5.52If any other champion rides ahead,I soon shall lay him headlong with the dead.”
- C4.5.53The king replied: “You have not learned war’s ways; Why should the king seek you on battle days?
- C4.5.54I am his match, if combat he should claim;Beneath my feet shall fall his flesh and name.
- C4.5.55If he should come to face me in the field,Both armies would set down the sword and shield.”
- C4.5.56Then Shideh said: “O father, worldly-wise,If he should challenge you before our eyes,
- C4.5.57Five living sons stand here; while we draw breath,We will not let you face the field of death.
