Khosrow Seats Zal Beside Him
From C4.54, Khosrow’s Answer and Zal’s Apology. It illustrates C4.54.40–51 (to C4.54.52):
- C4.54.40Zal heard, bewildered by the words proclaimed,And could not meet the eyes of him he blamed.
- C4.54.41Then with a cry he rose upon his feet,And said, “O Shah, whose worship is complete,
- C4.54.42My fault was rashness, folly in my view; But pure and wise and godly, Shah, are you.
- C4.54.43Forgive me if the Div has led me wrong; My years in service to the Shahs are long.
- C4.54.44For countless years I bound my belt and stoodBefore the throne and served the royal good.
- C4.54.45No king I knew had sought this road, this boon,From God, Creator of the Sun and Moon.
- C4.54.46Now Kay Khosrow has come to teach us all;May evil fortune never make him fall.
- C4.54.47I do not wish to part from Khosrow’s side;Let wisdom witness all the grief inside.
- C4.54.48For all in Iran who desire his good,His deeds outweigh the grief we have withstood.
- C4.54.49Our sorrow comes because we now must partFrom just Khosrow, the hope of every heart.”
- C4.54.50The Shah approved the plea that Zal expressed; The elder’s words had set his heart at rest.
- C4.54.51He took Zal’s hand and drew him to his side,And seated him beside him, satisfied.
