The Four Women Fall in Grief
From C4.61, Khosrow Takes Leave of His Women. It illustrates C4.61.1–9:
- C4.61.1He had four radiant women; none had seenTheir faces even in a dream’s clear sheen.
- C4.61.2He called those idols from their bowers away,And told his purpose plainly on that day:
- C4.61.3“I am about to leave this earthly place;Let neither grief nor pain your hearts embrace.
- C4.61.4You shall not look upon my face once more;I tire of earth and all the griefs it bore.
- C4.61.5I go to God, the holy Judge above,And see no path returning to your love.”
- C4.61.6The four fell senseless, overcome by grief;Their cries of love and pain found no relief.
- C4.61.7They tore their faces, plucked their flowing hair,And broke their jeweled ornaments in despair.
- C4.61.8Then each, as sense returned, began to cry,And raised her voice in lamentation high:
- C4.61.9“Take us as well from this inconstant sphere,And lead us on the hidden road from here.”
